STANLEY PARK

Vancouver - British Columbia - CANADA

Introduction

Stanley Park is considered by many to be the jewel of not only the City of Vancouver but also of the Lower Mainland. I have a similar point of view and this web site is my opportunity to provide testimony in support of that opinion. All comments or narrative are personal and are not meant to suggest any official endorsement by any level of government or by any tourism agency.

Geography - Location of Downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park

Vancouver is a generally rectangular area longer east/west than north/south. Except for the eastern border with the city of Burnaby which is a straight line north/south called Boundary Road, Vancouver is surrounded by water. The Strait of Georgia on the west, the north arm of the Fraser River on the south and Burrard Inlet on the north. The downtown core, the West End and finally Stanley Park are almost separated from the rest of the city by two other connected bodies of water. First English Bay then False Creek which borders the southern end of the downtown core.

The next image shows how False Creek almost surrounds the south side of the downdown core. Not shown at the extreme right is Granville Island which marks the generally accepted point of transition from English Bay to False Creek.

Access to Stanley Park

This image indicates the three vehicular entrances (Georgia, Nelson and Beach) as well as the opportunity for numerous pedestrian points of entry between Georgia Street and Beach Avenue.

Personal Comments

All the photography is of the point and shoot variety and the only filter used when appropriate was a polarizer. All scanning was done from prints. The resolution chosen was based on fast page loading. No "photography as an art" statements are implied.

I live and work next door to Stanley Park so not a day goes by that I don't interact with it by virtue of proximity. The Georgia Street entrance to the park is no more than 30 minutes walk from the downtown core. The Nelson and Beach entrances are 5 - 10 minutes longer. The three entrances mentioned are the vehicular ones. From Georgia Street to Beach Avenue there are numerous pedestrian paths that lead into the park. This provides me with constant access whatever the season, time of day or weather situation.

My wish is that anyone anywhere in the world who may desire a deeper understanding or awareness of this place called Stanley Park in a city called Vancouver or anyone who may want to share their own experiences here with others in distant places will find this site useful and that it serves their purpose.
